MS Excel 2000

Without any type of formatting, is there a limitation to the number of
characters you are able to type in an individual cell?

I am only looking for the maximum number you are able to freely type in
the cell, not the function of limiting the characters a user is
permitted to type.

Also, does the character type matter (e.g. number, string)?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

To be exact for Excel 2000

32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a cell; all
32,767 display in the
formula bar.

For other details see:

Help > Getting Started > Microsoft Excel specifications.

Length of formula is restricted to 1024 in one cell.
