I thought the index . dat file was a " locked " file. If
download a
program that deletes it, can that cause any problems to my system? just
wondering
Hello, Ray
The index.dat file is a locked system file. All it does is stor
information about what you have done and where you have been, how yo
went about getting to where you are and that sort of thing. It als
holds personal information about you and other users
That is why these files are so dangerous to have just laying aroun
as more and more spy ware has been developed that can read the file
and interpret what all is what in them and then relay that messag
back to whom ever set up the malware/spy ware
That is why more and more anti-spy ware/malware programs have bee
developed to remove and/or delete theses files
It is OK to delete them. They are not pertinent to the operatin
system itself but were set up to help in fixing bugs within th
system by storing information about what you were doing at the time
bug happened to strike your system. A very good idea at the time...bu
as one can see now, there needs to be a newer approach to thi
information
What happens when they are removed....system reports they are missin
and restores an empty folder to start all over with. An ongoing sag
of stored information
Hope this helps
