i have windows xp home edition 2002 sp2. i am a "beginer" to computers. is
incredimail (free version) safe to run/use? also any/all tips to
help me learn (fun stuff too) about/and how to use, maintain, ect... my
computer are greatly apreciated.

Yes despite what you may read. No spyware or malware at all. The free
version does however carry ads in the notification area (clock at top
right).
I have a new forum http://www.incrediforum.com
It's easy to set up, it automatically copies all settings from Outlook
Express. No newsgroups though, you still would have to use OE for those.

I've been using the registered version for 3 years and agree with Peter, one
thing to note, when I used the free version the ads running did slow my
system down, not so when registered.

Incredimail puts ads on your computer. I wouldn't recommend it. You
don't need all that flash when you're just sending an email. And it is
really obnoxious to get mail with blinking smiley faces all over it.

I've got general (and specific) tips and links on my website and here
are some more links to help you:

http://computerhaven.info/ - this site is run by MVP Patty MacDuffie and
is a *great* forum for beginners. Patty is kind and caring, and her
focus is on helping newbies gently. Can't recommend it highly enough!

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com - my site, which isn't fancy but has
a lot of info aimed mostly at end users

http://www.aumha.org - Jim Eshelman's site with lots of wonderful
information about staying safe on the Internet, etc.

And the very best link of all - http://www.google.com

The ads another poster mentioned do not install on your system they run in
the upper left corner in real time NO MALWARE IS INSTALLED!.
You can disable the ad funtion when/if you register the program.
And their are many other animations you can use besides "smiley faces",I
have not had even 1 person I send mail to (friends or family) complain
infact they like it. However if the person you are sending to is still on
dialup you might consider sending in plain text.

Well, I don't use Windows to send or receive email so I don't need to
worry about whether Incredimail will slow my system down. I doubt it
would slow down a recent Windows system either. Maybe your family and
friends enjoy the blinky smiley faces etc. or maybe they just don't
want to hurt your feelings. I don't tell my 15-year-old niece how silly
her Incredimail-generated emails are because we love her. Another thing
to bear in mind is that not everyone allows html mail into their system
and so the Incredimail bells and whistles won't even show up. Another
reason to just send plain text mails.

The OP asked if Incredimail was safe and for some links to good sites
for beginners. So now we know that Incredimail is safe and that some
people like it and some people don't. As always, it's about choice and
YMMV.

I hate getting "cute" Incredimail messages, but it is not worth the time to
complain to the sender.
I also hate being on the mailing list for forwarded jokes and inspirational
messages.
If I get these more than once, I do complain to the sender.
I suspect if you ask your (friends and family), one on one, if they would
just as soon, you did not use the "cute" emails, they would say YES.

Since many of them have asked me where they can get the program at and now
use it it is unnessary to ask them.
