Running XP pro and the welcome screen is displaying a mail
notification when I have no new mail. Is it possible to
disable this function or find out where the unread message
might be hiding? I am using outlook express but this is
saying I have no messages at all ie no new, no old, no
deleted and no draft. Don't know what else to do. I looked
at the knowledge base and this mentioned a registry key
but didn't really seem to be what I was after. Hope
someone can help. Thanks

tim

I found a registry key called MessageCount which I reset
to zero and this seems to have solved the problem.

cheers

Go to line 100 on the left, here you can disable the function

Hi!
The best way to clear the unread-email counter is to download the Tweak
UI XP PowerToys
:-http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and
perform the following steps:
1. Start Tweak UI.
2. Select the Repair branch in the left-hand pane of the dialog box.
3. Select "Repair unread mail count" in the right-hand pane, then click
"Repair Now".
4. Close Tweak UI.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon - Unread Mail page has a check box to disable it; its Repair
- select Repair Unread mail will reset the count
