Inconsistent Performance: PPT 2003

I have created a kiosk presentation that links to separate files. The main presentation links to other files that are basically flashcards. These flashcards contain background music, and on each slide there is a word and a spoken word. (I use Windows XP and PPT 2003.) I have packaged it to a CD and view the presentation with the PPT 2003 Viewer. Most of the time everything works great. Sometimes strange things happen:

1. Sometimes the sounds (.wav files) in the flashcards play twice. For instance, I hear, "jump," and then again "jump." At the same time, the background music (.midi files) plays two separate tracks simultaneously. It will do this for about 5 slides before it corrects itself.

2. One time the background music playing in a show did not stop, even after the show was over and the user had returned to the main presentation. (When a flashcard show ends, the user clicks on an end show action button, which closes the show and returns the user to the main presentation.)

3. I linked a text box to a separate file. This file was an introduction, and I added buttons so the user could navigate through it. When I would click on the end show button at the end of the show, the file would close and I would return to the main presentation. Back at the main presentation, sometimes I could not click on the introduction button anymore. I noticed that if I was very careful, I could click on the edge of the invisible text box and it would take me to the show. However, if I clicked only partway through the show, and clicked on an end show button in the middle of the presentation, then I could click on the introduction button again. Sometimes it would work fine until I packaged it for CD, and then this problem would arise. I finally seem to have worked around this problem by filling in the text box with a white fill. I don't have this problem with any other buttons. My other buttons that are similar in appearance only link to other slides in the same file. My other buttons that link to separate files are GIF images, and they are reliable. Anyway, I solved my problem, but there seems to be something strange going on. It's that inconsistent performance that bothers me.

Are these inconsistencies unavoidable? Is ppt just not very reliable? I have spent a great deal of time on this and am frustrated that it does not run very smoothly.

Thanks for any comments,
Sharon

Oh! I figured it out! If I click more than once on a show, then it will open the linked file more than once. This does not happen when I view the presentations saved on my hard-drive, but it does happen when I view them from a CD in PPT Viewer. I'm still not sure about the inconsistent hyperlink, but since I found a work-around, I'm not too worried about it.

Sharon,

Glad you got it sorted!

As for your click woes, I saw this the other day on triggers. You click once
and it is fine. But then you go back and it's different.

That's fantastic news, Sharon! Thanks for the followup -- I know this will keep me from scratching my head all night. :-)

Regarding your button links, ISTR that there's something about no line/no fill (or is it a gradient fill?) buttons and problems in the PPT Viewer. Anybody remember the specifics?

I've had some problems clicking on buttons and textboxes
with "no fill." The solution is to fill them with something and then
set the fill at 90% transparency (if you really want it to look like there's noo
fill).

Have you asked your friend for a detailed description of what is wanted and what
they mean by a "flashcard"? It's not a term from the PowerPoint vocabulary, so
maybe a description will "ring a bell". Or did them ask that you create a Flash
file?
