Inconsistent Internet Speed

I have a question regarding my internet connection. I'm running under a cable connection and get relatively fast speeds when browsing. But when I play on-line games, I get frequent "lag spikes" every minute or so, resulting in an unsmooth gameplay. This happens all the, to all servers, whether with 32 players or more, or even if I'm the only one in the server. I need help to somehow "smoothen" out my connection. By the way, I also tried using Spybot and AdAware to remove and spyware, and yet I still get "lag spikes." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

And what kind of system are you operating?
What processor at what speed?
How much RAM?
What kind of Display Adapter with how much RAM on it and is it using the most up to date driver?
What kind of Sound Controller and is it using the most up to date driver?
Any possible interfering third-party services or programs?

I am using Windows XP Pro. With an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ running at 1.73 ghz. I have 512 PC2100 ram with a 40GB Harddrive. I'm using nVidia MX420 with the latest driver update. My sound controller is a built-in sound chip, C-Media, also running at its latest drivers. I am also using the built-in Windows Xp firewall in conjunction with my Linksys 4 port router. Now with given onformation, why do I get inconsistent speed while playing multiplayer games online. I don't notice my ping getting that high, it just lags every minute or so. Please help me if you can. Thank you.

By any chance do the games you are playing have their own internal
settings for screen resolution (independent of system screen resolution)?
If so, are they set at a relatively low setting? If not, is the system screen
resolution set a relatively low setting? If so, then try bumping up the
screen resolution. How about color quality? Set to the highest?

If that is not the cause of the issue, then maybe some third-party service and or
Startup group item might be the source of the issue.

You could try trouble shooting with System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG)
and temporarily turn off Third-party services and Startup Items and restarting
and test the game playing on line and see if that makes any difference.
