Incoming Mail Server Resetting Itself

Each time I close Outlook Express the Incoming Mail Server
gets reset to localhost. I've checked the permissions on
the .dbx files and none of them are read only. I have
also renamed Folders.dbx so a new one would be created.
Neither of these things worked. The setting for the
Incomig Mail Server does show up behind the Account name -
<account>/<Incoming Mail Server>. Can anyone tell me how
to get the Incoming Mail Server to keep its entry?
THANK YOU,
Corley

This might be caused by spyware or a virus that has
possilby setup a local e-mail redirector to infect e-mails
or send spam.

Additionally, after you have scanned with a recent, full-featured
antivirus using absolutely up-to-date virus definitions, do this:

Set XP's Search to use Advanced features and look in hidden files.
Search for "hosts" - without the quotes. Double-click each file you
find. You'll get the Windows dialog box asking how to open the file.
Choose "pick from a list" and pick Notepad, making sure the checkbox to
always use this program to open this type of file is *not* checked.
Look carefully at each hosts file (including the lmhosts file). You
should *only* have this entry in it:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Be sure to scroll all the way down the file's window to the bottom if
there is a scrollbar. If there are other entries, delete them and Save.
Do this for each hosts and lmhosts file you found.

Thank you both for your responses. Norton 2004 with all
patches doesn't detect anything and checking my hosts and
lmhosts was also a dead end. The hosts file only has the
localhost entry and lmhosts doesn't have any entries. Any
other ideas?

Are you using any sort of popup stopper proxy? Other than that, I'm
sorry but I'll have to bow out since I haven't used OE for years. You
might want to post your question in one of the OE newsgroups - the
regulars are experts on OE. Here's a link to a listing of all the MS

Good luck and sorry I couldn't solve your issue,

Norton *is* the problem! NAV Email Protection changes the POP3 server to
127.0.0.1. Disable it. It provides no additional protection and even
Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and
malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in
addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including
email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus
definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and
set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully
protected.
