I would like to have Word open each time I start my computer. Can you advise
how I can make this happen?

THanks!

Try this:
1. Locate the shortcut that launches Word.
2. Right-click it, then click "Copy".
3. Right-click the Start button and Click Explore.
4. Navigate to "c:\documents and settings\"Your Name"\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup.
5. Right-click an empty part of the screen, then click "Paste".

In other words: Every shortcut located in the "Startup" folder
is executed at logon time.

You can have all the programs you want start automatiocally at boot by
putting shortcuts to them in the folder

c:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

create a shortcut for the program in your startup folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs|Startup
replace "Username" with yours.
assuming "C" drive
