Knack

A nuisance sound comes out of the right side speaker of my WinXP Pro (SP1a)
laptop. It's a continuous, rapid clicking noise; sounds more like an
underwater porpoise than a computer ;-) Started doing this today just after
bootup, and rebooting doesn't clear it. Not possible to affect this noise
via Windows' Volume Control.

Recall hearing a noise like this a month ago while my pet cat briefly stood
on some keys while the laptop was booted. However, none of the keys appear
to be stuck down today.

Ideas, anyone?

Are you sure it isn't coming from the hard drive? That would be very bad.
A defective speaker could also be the cause.

go into the mixer and turn off (mute check box) each input source one at a
time to see if it goes away. Often the CD Player and/or Line In inputs
are the culprit.

Definitely not the HDD, which has a distinctly different click. The sound
comes from the right speaker of the laptop; not the center area of the
laptop where the HDD slides out.

Sometimes the noise is heard while the boot menu is displayed, and then
ceases when the Windows splash screen appears (just before the logon
screen). Other times the noise doesn't begin until the Windows splash screen
appears; in which case the noise persists for the entire power-up session.
