Since changing my Yamaha CDRW drive to an NEC ND-1300A
DVDRW drive every time I boot up windows I get the 'STOP
error' message 0x0000007B and have to restart, boot up in
safe mode, then restart again booting normally to get in
to Windows. I have to do this every time I turn my
computer on. I have read Microsoft's Knowledge Base
Article on this type of error message, but it is as clear
as mud to someone like me who doesn't know the technical
jargon. I am open to any help or info you can give.
Thanks

Did you read this:

"STOP 0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" Error Message When You Start
Your Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287043

It says to repair your Windoows 2000 installation and it's simple enough
to understand.

Before you try the repair you might want to take a look in the Device
Manager and see if the Yamaha CDRW is properly installed, maybe the
drivers need to be reinstalled or maybe you can remove the device and
try to have "Plug & Pray" try to detect and install it again.

The article you suggest refers to replacing a motherboard -
is that still relevant? And will I lose any data by
repairing my Windows installation?

Maybe, in the sense that you added new hardware and Windows 2000 didn't
seem to take to it or understand the change. Windows 2000 doesn't like
having hardware changes that it doesn't know of. The repair might (?)
see the different hardware and act accordingly.

repairing my Windows installation?

You shouldn't but anything is possible.

The repair is the last option. Try doing as Pegasus suggested, remove
the device and see if things correct themselves. You can then try to
reinstall it.

.
one of two distinct possibilities:
the cd drive is not jumpered properly. search the web to
find out how to do that.
bad driver for the device, look for a better driver at
the makers website.
