Inability to install SP2

I would really appreciate some help from anyone who has
successfully installed SP2 on a machine with an AMD
Athlon 64 processor.

After installation, my machine constantly reboots as
described in Knowledge Base Article 878474. However, I do
not have the file Mpegport.sys on my system. Nor do I
have Sigma Designs Hollywood Plus DVD decoder installed.

Obviously, I cannot follow the MS workaround by disabling
a file that does not exist on my computer.

Should I turn off DEP completely, even though this would
negative one of the advantages in having the processor?

Any other suggestions would be most gratefully received.

As far as I know, the current version of XP Service Pack 2 is only designed for a 32 bit Operating System with a 32 bit CPU. There are
untested areas and potential issues if this Service Pack 2 is installed on a 64 bit CPU. Currently, the MS development team is designing a
new Service Pack 2 version for a 64 bit CPU, which should be out next year.

In order to fix your computer, I believe it is best to temporarily remove Service Pack 2.

In your case with the constant reboot, the Recovery Console XPSP2 removal is your only option.

I also had the same problem with SP2 and the AMD 64. I
guess this is just another case of Microsoft not
supporting the Athlon 64 until Intel can create a
competitive product. It would be nice if they could keep
up with the latest technology.

As Darren says, the only way I was able to fix it was to
go into safe mode and restore the computer to the pre-SP2
condition. It should only take 15 min at most.

Alan,

yes, you should. Running without Service Pack 2 negates that
advantage just as well. And the problem can still be solved by
upgrading the driver that causes the problem. Just upgrade all
drivers. The most likely ones are USB, Firewire, SATA, other
disk controller drivers.
