In Word the message "custom dictionary full" how can this be?

I got this message while reviewing a science paper. New or misspelled words
are still underlined but I cannot correct them since the command is greyed
out.

Any idea what has hapened?
 
Historically the custom dictionary could only be 64K (though I believe this
changed with Windows XP). You can, however, have more than one custom
dictionary.

This is the error message for all dictionary errors. It might mean
that the dictionary is full, or it might mean something else entirely.

If you are using Word 97 or earlier, you may have exceeded the limit
of 64KB on the file size. Later versions don't have that limit.

The dictionary is an ANSI file not a Unicode file. If you try to add
any word that contains characters that are not in the "code page"
(1252 for English systems), you will get the "Dictionary Is Full"
universal error message.
