I like to type white letters on a black background...I can't seem to find a
way to change this in Word (I use Word 2003). Any suggestions?

You can't. You can do white on a blue background but this is problematic
(some formatting characters are grey and seem to get lost on the screen).
Tools > Options > View > General

Otherwise, you can change your Windows settings. (I currently type in black
on a sky-blue background.).

Hi, jiggidy. You can choose a blue background with white text by selecting
that option in Tools | Options | General.

I'd do this:
View > Print Layout
Format>Background
Choose the color for the background & OK
Format>Font
Choose color white for text and OK

Let me know how it works out
