In Justify why does inserted text sometimes replace existing text

Sometimes, when I'm writing in Justify mode and I want to insert a work or
other text, the word I'm inserting REPLACES other text rather than just
inserting it. Can anyone tell me why and how do I avoid this? Thanks!

This has nothing to do with paragraph alignment. You have inadvertently
pressed the Insert key, which toggles between Insert and Overtype modes.
Either press it again or double-click OVR on the status bar.
