Ok ... I installed vista beta (sp2) ... and it didn't fly very well on my pc
(although, not for a lack of trying), so I decided to go back to XP Pro.

I inserted the XP CD ... and went through the paces ... formated the main
partition and installed XP. It took some time for all the updates to
complete, but they did indeed complete and it's working. However, something
went a-miss. Somewhere in the process, my other partiations (on the same
physical drive) got renamed and have new letter id's - I can live with that.
And ... both partitions showed up with the existing directory structure, but
denied me access !! A day later, (and I can't explain it) one of the drives
gave me access and it's behaving ok, however, the 3rd partiation (with 42 gb
of files) denies me access. :( :( :( HELP!!! gasp!!!

Any ideas on how I can get at those files. I don't remember what the names
of the drives(partitions) were, although I didn't need the name of the one
partition that suddenly gave me access. I'm the administrator on the pc
(and was before).

I'd sure appreciate any help!!!! Thanks.

Thanks JS, I'll check it out.
This might sound crazy, but will it tell me what it was named (it's not
important that I have that name back) ... is it required for getting
ownership back. I can rename the drive at any time, otherwise!.

You most likely need to take ownership of the files.
read this MS KB article about how to take ownership of files.

Access is Denied Error Message:

Shared folder access:

Also the partitions can have their drive letters changed back to what you
want them to be using Disk Management

JS ... just looked at the KB articles, and they seem to describe what's
happened.
I'm leaving work late, ... will give these a try. Thanks again for the
response.

No, but if your old drive had more than one partition, the second partition
is usually D or E assuming the first was C and that you had one CD/DVD drive
installed. If there are no applications installed on the second partition it
really does not matter all that much which letter you change it to.

Agreed ... I only mentioned it cuz I thought it might be related to the
problem. But the name is of no real consequence to me ... besides ... it
can be changed again.

Hey ... your solution worked. Talk about terrific. I used the 2nd fix -
Article Q308421 ... worked like a charm. Thank you soooooooo much.

Now ... I need to unformat an FAT drive ... and that's not proving to be
easy - got more stuff on it than you can imagine (all my data files). I had
backups, but they weren't quite as recent as I needed, but I'm getting
closer. One step at a time, I guess!

Glad I could help. Just a reminder that FAT32 partitions have a file size
limit of 4GB which can cause problems with image backups and burning DVDs on
occasion.

Just thought I'd let you know that the article that allowed me to take
"ownership" of the files did the trick for me. Thank you very much for the
lead. Appreciated.

Your welcome again.
