I have a dial-up modem and when I download, the data
transfer rate is pathetic - something like 3.6 Kb sec. Is
there anything I can do to improve this? Any suggestions
would be much appreciated.
Thank you, Marian Rumens

This is not enough information about your system to get a definitive
answer. The problem could be 1) your ISP; 2) your modem; 3) your
telephone lines; 4) you might have a virus and/or spyware stealing
bandwidth. Did you ever have good throughput? If so, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

Do the normal Windows troubleshooting: 1) scan with current antivirus
("current" means a version not earlier than 2002 but using updated
virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
(www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com). Be sure to
update these programs before running, and it is a good idea to do
virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and
www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs info.

After you know your computer is virus and spyware-free, if you are still
having problems, repost and include the information outlined in
paragraph 1, and be sure to also tell us what you've already done to
troubleshoot.

There is tons of stuff you can do to improve performance when using a modem. The first and most important is to get a hardware driven modem and not a software driven one. Most of todays modems are cheap and don't have there own chip(hardware) and are called winmodems. These are notorious for poor performance. Try a good free program like SpeedXP and make sure you have your manufacturers latest drivers. If you need one on one help then just e:mail me. I will need to know the Make and Model of your modem and some stuff about your connection, like how far you are away from your IP's modem pool and so on. Let me know. Good luck.

Probably not. On compressed data - zip files, jpg, MP3 and the like,
this is not good for dialup, but the limit is probably set by your
phone connection to the exchange. See what bit rate is indicated if you
double click the 'two computers' icon in the task bar: A connection at
50000, which is about best you are at all likely to see, might give
about 4500 bytes a second
