Impossible

This should be under the 'Humor' catagory:

How do you tell your boss that their grand database dream
that they want me to build that will capture everything,
link everything, and manage every conceivable report
automatically is impossible to do?

Certainly understand the humor side.

It may be useful to get him thinking along the lines of, "Which aspects of
this project are worth the effort it will take to achieve them?"

Hopefully that approach will help define the boundaries of what will
otherwise seem as boundless as the ocean.

Tell him how long it will take.

We decided several years ago to build a custom app that will run our
business. It certainly was not impossible, it just needs to be taken one
step at a time and things need to be prioritized. In our case I did the
initial app in '99 and came on in '02 full time to expand. We now have 3
years of development and everyday something new is thought of and I work on
it to add it. Sometimes they are 5 minute projects, others they are 2
weeks. Just make sure that your boss is aware of all of the things you are
doing.

I personally don't believe in "impossible" if there is a valid use or need.
You need to learn and understand why your boss wants this and then maybe you
will discover it is realistic. One of the keys is you have to be able to
look at it from multiple points of view. Not just a programmer view. You
need to understand the business and management side of it also.

I always tell my clients that nothing is impossible; just that the more
impossible it is the more it will cost.

In the end the cost is relative to the benefit, some impossible things are
worth doing if the benefit is great enough.

File under Philosophy :-)
