Save your data in an "Outlook 97-2002" PST. Open that in Outlook 2002.
Do not export.

out of curiosity: i'm experiencing a related issue on a
win2k box running outlook 2002. i am trying to move the
user's .PST to a new box (same environment), and while the
# of items is correct, the inbox materials are completely
missing. the user was out for several weeks but i thought
autoarchive was disabled on the initial PC. any thoughts?

Not a related issue.
How did you move the PST?
Are you saying that when you open this PST in one installation it appears
differently than in another?
