Importing PSD fails

After a system crash, I reloaded XP Pro, then Outlook 2003. Prior to the
backup, I copied my HD to an external drive.

Last week I reported problems resulting from overlaying the new/empty PSD
file, and being unable to edit the registry successfully, I reloaded the
system yet again today.

After loading Outlook and creating the inital (empty) PSD file, I used the
import tool to pull in the backed up PSD. I selected the "import to same
folder" option.

After processing for a lengthy period of time, I receive an error message
"The operation failed." No indication of where it failed, no log appears to
be produced, and I'm stumped as to how to proceed...

What is interesting is that the source PSD is 914,641kb - yet the target
(new) PSD is 972,177kb.

Is there a way to determine what the problem may be, or how to resolve it?

Thanks,
Greg

1) i assume you mean pst, not psd.
2) copy the old pst to the hard drive - you my docs folder is fine. Go to
file, open, outlook data file in outlook and open the pst.

Hi Diane,

Thanks, I'm still working on this.

I created a folder under the outlook folder, and copied the backed up .PSTto
C:\Documents and Settings\GregD\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\migrated

Opening the old .PST, that resulted in a second occurance of the top-level
"personal folders". The first set, of course, is the newly created .pst
from when I initialized Outlook.

I then proceeded to move the various sub-folders, "clients", "friends", and
so on to the new .PST. My hope is, once I copy all of these, to re-close
the older .PST so only one set of inbox/outbox/drafts/sent appears.

I am now getting this error:
"Can't move the items. Unable to move or copy folders. Can't move folder.
A top-level folder can't be moved to one of it's subfolders. Or, you may not
have the appropriate permissions for the folder. To check your permissions
for the folder, right-click the folder, and then right-click Properties on
the folder."

Unfortunately, the folder properties has nothing about permissions.

My folder structure looks like this:

Personal folders
... clients
.... client 1
.... client 2
.... etc.
... friends
.... friend 1
.... friend 2
.... etc.
... other stuff
.... sub-folder 1
.... sub-folder 2 <-- 1 message left in here that will not move - *
.... etc.

* reviewing the various folders, I found a single message that did not move,
and when I try to drag that individual over, I get another error "can't move
the items"

What's up here?

Don't move the folder but set your migrated folder as the default delivery
location by going to;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts-> button Next-> use the drop down list below to
chane it and then restart Outlook.

OK, one final question.

After posting the above, and before receiving a response, I proceeded with
copying all of the folders and ended up locating less than a dozen
subfolders containing messages that (for whatever reason) simply refuse to
allow themselves to be moved. I can now choose to retain the new PST with
migrated messages, or retain the old file using Robert's instructions.

After copying all but the above-mentioned messages that won't move, the new
PST file grew substantially.

Original PST = 914,641 kb
New PST = 1,047,569kb

I had previously converted the original PST (a couple months ago) to the
Outlook 2003 format which supports larger files. And when I alter the
delivery location (as Robert instructed) an alert is issued stating that
"the default delivery location no longer supports multilingual Unicode data.

Why is the new file so much larger? Is it simply the additional data to
reflect UNICODE support?

If I do not need multilingual support, is there a way to become assured that
the migrated PST file is of the format which supports larger files? Or
shall I just stay with the new larger PST?

Thanks again,
Greg D

1) you can move the default folders, you need to move the contents (or copy
the folder and contents)
2) unicode psts are larger.

Should be the first methods:

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when
you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

Bless your soul! That worked. At first I could not find the contacts
folder, then I discovered how to reveal the contact folder, view/edit the
properties, and then I exported/imported the addresses over to the new
unicode file and I'm in good shape.

As mentioned in another post, when I try to import the account settings, I'm
immediately told "no internet accounts were found to import". I'm searching
the web for an answer, but I't sure like to discover that there is a way to
capture the account definitions from the HD image I backed up.

Thanks,
Greg

OK, one final question.

After posting the above, and before receiving a response, I proceeded
with copying all of the folders and ended up locating less than a dozen
subfolders containing messages that (for whatever reason) simply refuse
to allow themselves to be moved. I can now choose to retain the new PST
with migrated messages, or retain the old file using Robert's
instructions.

After copying all but the above-mentioned messages that won't move, the
new PST file grew substantially.

Original PST = 914,641 kb
New PST = 1,047,569kb

I had previously converted the original PST (a couple months ago) to the
Outlook 2003 format which supports larger files. And when I alter the
delivery location (as Robert instructed) an alert is issued stating that
"the default delivery location no longer supports multilingual Unicode
data.

Why is the new file so much larger? Is it simply the additional data to
reflect UNICODE support?

If I do not need multilingual support, is there a way to become assured
that the migrated PST file is of the format which supports larger files?
Or shall I just stay with the new larger PST?

Thanks again,
Greg D

in message Don't move the folder but set your migrated folder as the default
delivery location by going to;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts-> button Next-> use the drop down list below to
chane it and then restart Outlook.

Hi Diane,

Thanks, I'm still working on this.

I created a folder under the outlook folder, and copied the backed up
.PSTto C:\Documents and Settings\GregD\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\migrated

Opening the old .PST, that resulted in a second occurance of the
top-level "personal folders". The first set, of course, is the newly
created .pst from when I initialized Outlook.

I then proceeded to move the various sub-folders, "clients",
"friends", and so on to the new .PST. My hope is, once I copy all of
these, to re-close the older .PST so only one set of
inbox/outbox/drafts/sent appears.

I am now getting this error:
"Can't move the items. Unable to move or copy folders. Can't move
folder. A top-level folder can't be moved to one of it's subfolders.
Or, you may not have the appropriate permissions for the folder. To
check your permissions for the folder, right-click the folder, and
then right-click Properties on the folder."

Unfortunately, the folder properties has nothing about permissions.

My folder structure looks like this:

Personal folders
.. clients
... client 1
... client 2
... etc.
.. friends
... friend 1
... friend 2
... etc.
.. other stuff
... sub-folder 1
... sub-folder 2 <-- 1 message left in here that will not move - *
... etc.

* reviewing the various folders, I found a single message that did not
move, and when I try to drag that individual over, I get another error
"can't move the items"

What's up here?

1) i assume you mean pst, not psd.
2) copy the old pst to the hard drive - you my docs folder is fine.
Go to file, open, outlook data file in outlook and open the pst.

After a system crash, I reloaded XP Pro, then Outlook 2003. Prior
to the backup, I copied my HD to an external drive.

Last week I reported problems resulting from overlaying the
new/empty PSD file, and being unable to edit the registry
successfully, I reloaded the system yet again today.

After loading Outlook and creating the inital (empty) PSD file, I
used the import tool to pull in the backed up PSD. I selected the
"import to same folder" option.

After processing for a lengthy period of time, I receive an error
message "The operation failed." No indication of where it failed,
no log appears to be produced, and I'm stumped as to how to
proceed...

What is interesting is that the source PSD is 914,641kb - yet the
target (new) PSD is 972,177kb.

Is there a way to determine what the problem may be, or how to
resolve it?

Thanks,
Greg

The import account settings refer to Outlook Express. You should contact
your ISP for the server details, username, password and e-mail address.

Bless your soul! That worked. At first I could not find the contacts
folder, then I discovered how to reveal the contact folder, view/edit the
properties, and then I exported/imported the addresses over to the new
unicode file and I'm in good shape.

As mentioned in another post, when I try to import the account settings,
I'm immediately told "no internet accounts were found to import". I'm
searching the web for an answer, but I't sure like to discover that there
is a way to capture the account definitions from the HD image I backed up.

Thanks,
Greg

Should be the first methods:

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible
when you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book.
Is the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories
or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed,
add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it
and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

The account settings are kept in the Registry. Your old account settings
are in the old Registry and I don't know of any tools that read any Registry
not the active one. It' would be much simpler just to recreate your
accounts by hand. It shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes.
