Hi,

I have many Works spreadsheets (version 4.5a) that need to be
converted to Excel format (Excel 2000 - 9.0.3821-SR-1). How can I do
this please ?

Peter

Hi Peter,

Here are the instructions for converting Works (version 4.5 incl) to XL 97.
Don't worry XL 97 is compatible with XL 2000. If you can open it in XL 97,
you will have now difficulty with XL 2000.

If you had some complicated macros, then there is a chance you might have
had difficulties of some sort. But given that you are using Works, I
suspect that you have data only.

Here is the link for reference:

And key instructions are as follows:

To Convert a Works for Windows Spreadsheet to Excel 97
1.. Open the spreadsheet file in Works for Windows.
2.. On the File menu click Save As.
3.. Under Save File as Type, choose the appropriate converter:
Works for Windows 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5, 4.5a: click Excel SS
Works for Windows 3.0x: click Excel 4.0/5.0 SS
4.. Click Save.
5.. Start Excel 97 and open the document.

Yes, no macros, just a few 'sums' here and there.

Thanks, that worked okay. There was a message in Works after I
selected the "save as | Excel SS" option::

"The range names for Microsoft Excel are not valid.

Make sure your range names begin with a letter, an underscore (_), or
a backslash (\), and contain only letters or numbers."

The cells only have values in them, or some cells have:

=SUM(C24*H24) (simple multiply)

or

=SUM(I16:I57) (range)

or

=SUM(I58*0.45*-1) (discount)

so I don't see any problems. The saved file opened up okay with Excel
2000, and the "SUMS" were okay, all of the layout and formats
converted just fine, only needs a few minor cell height changes.

Many thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter,

I am glad that you were able to readily convert your spreadsheets. I was
concerned that you might no longer have Works, and ONLY had XL 2000. But as
it is, you had the appropriate software, and your battles have been won.

Regards,
Kevin

Yes, I've continued to use Works for different things, but decided it
was time to move into the 21st Century, also not many people can read
a Works spreadsheet as an email attachment, whereas Excel even has a
free viewer. So, time for the change, I think. :)

Thanks for your help,

Peter
