I just bought a new laptop and want to import my old mail to the new
system. The old system exports the file OK, but the new system cannot
import the file. After googling the error, I see that one possible
cause is that the file is read-only. Sure enough, I check and the one
I want to import is read-only. So I go to change it, but it always
converts back to read-only. So I take ownership of it, and change it
back, But it STILL makes itself read-only. I even try from my XP
partition after booting into XP.. Same thing.occurs.
So here I am with a new vista system, and can't even import my
mail from a vista system!! How wacked is that???
Does anyone have any ideas on what to try next?? Thanks!!

WOW, Nobody has an answer? I can remember when the groups would have 3
or 4 inputs to a question like this. Has windows become so complex
that it takes a and engineer to figure it out??? Can anyone help with
this problem??

Nobody here knows exactly what you're doing...

Use the File - Export - Messages- Microsoft Windows Mail - (select an empty
folder that you created, and don't create it in one of the old XP standard
"folders", like My Whatever)

and in the other program, File - Import

Thank you for your reply. However I have done this. I get over 3000
blank entries showing up, no headers, no sujects, no text. Googling
this problem I find a few hits that say that it's the antivirus
program, usually norton or mcaffe, but I have neither. Never the less
I removed my antivirus and still had this problem. I defies me why
vista can't even do an import from a vista system. The read problem I
menmtioned before persists, and the blank entries are left from my
first attempt.. My other attempts simply failed, saying the file was
in use.

Where are you exporting the messages to (local folder, network, CD/DVD, USB
stick)?
And how are you transferring them to the other computer (network, USB stick,
CD, floppy)?
Sounds like they are getting corrupted along the way.

I don't think so. The local folder to exported to an empty directory
in My Documents, and then copied to a usb stick. Clicking on any of
the emails on the new computer opens them in full. However when they
appear in Windows Mail, they are totally blank.

If you used Outlook Express on the old computer, see

Outlook Express is not installed on old computer, or the new one. This
is simply a straight foward import. I can report the problem is
solved. After scrolling down the list in the new computer of imported
emails, I discovered, that only the first bunch of them are blank, and
all of them are from the day I imported them. So apparently they were
added somehow during the inital import. Thanbk guys for all your
import, even if they all missed the answe3r. I really appreciate you
taking the time to answer me.
