I am now using Outlook Express 5.50.4807.1700 and Internet Explorer
5.50.4807.2300 on Windows ME. I will soon be getting a new computer that has
XP Home edition. How do I get my address book from my email and all the
favorites from my browser. I was assuming I exported them to a disc in the
old computer then used the Import in my new. Someone has said that the
versions of outlook and explorer in the XP will not allow this. Any advice?
Thanks.

WAB transfer to a different machine.

I'm assuming that the two machines are *not* connect in any way. Like a
network or a Direct Cable Connection. Copy your Windows Address Book to a
floppy.

Do a Search for *.wab
* is a wild card and will locate all wab files on your machine.
wab is the file extension for all Windows Address Books.
Mine is Wesley P_ Vogel.wab

Or Open Windows Address Book | Click Help | About Address Book |
Copy the path and paste it into the Start | Run box | Click OK

Typically located here >>
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book\SomeName.wab

Once your WAB is located right click it and select: Send To |
3½" Floppy (A:) Make sure there's a disk in the floppy drive.

Stick the disk you copied the *.wab to in the XP machine's floppy drive and
copy it to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Application Data\
Microsoft\Address Book

To open the floppy disk...
Start | Run | Type: a: | OK |
Right click your *.wab file and select: Copy

This will open the proper folder...
Start | Run | Type or paste the following:

%appdata%\Microsoft\Address Book

Click OK or hit the ENTER key.

Right click the right hand pane and select: Paste

You should now see your *.wab file.

I have imported favorites, address books, and messages from Windows 98 into
XP without problems. Probably these were all IE/OE 6.0, but I wouldn't
think that or ME would make any difference for favorites and address book
files.

OE5.5/IE5.5 are compatible here.

Favorites:
You can backup this folder with all subfolders, and restore to the new
location ("%userprofile%\Favorites" folder) -- but delete Desktop.ini
and "My Documents" from the backup first.

Address Book:
Either find and save the original Address Book, and replace the newly
created empty Address Book later (i.e. <yourname>.wab file), renaming
the old file as the new one,

or enter Address Book, select File -- Export -- Address Book, and save
the exported file. In the new system select: File -- Import -- Address
Book, and point to the exported file.

Your mail:
In OE select: Tools -- Options -- Maintenance -- Store folder. Then
close OE, and backup all the files from the folder you see here. In the
new system select the Tools -- Options -- Maintenance -- Store folder
again, see what this folder is, close OE, delete all the files in this
folder, and copy the saved files from the old system.

_
There are the other methods to transfer all these settings, too -- I
gave only one of them.

You should be able to Export them to a floppy. On your new computer Import
them from that floppy you placed in the drive. But... for your email
addresses make sure you open Address Book before you click on File...
Export. That way you will see the option to export as a .wab file. That
works best. (if you were not in Address Book but rather only in Outlook
Express, if you click on File...Export... Address Book, your only option is
to export it as a text file.
