Implications of removing Windows Messenger 4.7?

My friend is wanting to run MSN Messenger 6.1, but still has WM4.7
running concurrently. If he was to remove 4.7 completely using
Jonathan's remove fix, then install MSN Messenger 6.1, would all the
functions disabled by uninstalling 4.7, now be back in place after
installing 6.1?
 
No, Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will no longer with in MSN
Messenger 6.1 if Windows Messenger has been fully removed. Everything else should be fine
however.

Excuse my ignorance, but are these programs/utilities used by the
average user?(not a very good question!) What do they do and how are
they used?
