What's the best Windows software to enable non-computer-experts to
generate sensibly configured JPEG images from large TIFF originals? Good
automatic choice of parameters is more important than flexibility. No
other functionality required. I will stray a little off-topic by saying
that for my purposes it needn't be strictly freeware if shareware or
paid software is better.

Best wishes,

Down to standard photograph sizes ?.

Down to standard photograph sizes ?

I'd expect the software I'm looking for to offer a choice of options (in
particular, options which can be preconfigured for the user are OK;
maybe they can have different shortcuts for different operations?).

Typically, starting with a TIFF capable of printing a top-quality 8 x 10
inch print (10MB, say), I'd need to go down to an image to display in
part of a web page, an image to project in a presentation, and an image
to print on an A4 page of adequate quality. I'd expect to spend some
time, once and for all, configuring the various required formats.

Best wishes,

You set the size... Irfanview do the rest.

Photofiltre will do this nicely and you get an excellent graphics
program to boot:

PIXresizer
http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm

PIXresizer is a photo resizing program to easily create web and
e-mail friendly versions of your images with reduced file sizes.

The reduced files are saved in a different folder, so your original
images are not altered at all. PIXresizer offers several different
resizing methods to choose from and can automatically recognize
image sizes to calculate the best fit. In addition, it can convert
between image formats (JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG and TIFF),
rotate images, convert to grayscale and resize multiple images
in batch mode.
