image garbles when copying from pc to removable HDD

i have 30-40min movies which i have saved in 16/9 format, MPG and which look
great on my pc; however when i try to back them up on my portable HDD (USB
2) the image portion of the video is slightly garbled with a large green
band on top of the image while the sound stays ok

what should i do ?

If you copy one back from the external drive to your hard drive and it runs
fine from there, that would indicate that your connection speed between the
computer and external drive isn't fast enough, or the external drive needs a
tune-up or isn't fast enough.
