Illegal XP Pro Install

Information

We have three computers in the office, all running XP Pro. Two are Dells.

We had some staff changeover, and the new director wanted to optimize how
everything ran.

As part of the work, we ran Windows Update. The two Dells updated just
fine, but the third machine will not validate.

We want to purchase a legit copy of XP, but do not want to reinstall. Is
there a way to validate the new (and legal) Product Key while not resetting
the system?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

You should also report whomever sold you this license to your local
law enforcement agencies; you've been defrauded.

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

You could try learning how to repair XP properly.

And just because it didn't validate, you think that it is illegal? You
do realize that many legitimate installs fail activation, and many
illegit install pass vailidation, don't you?

LOL! Jump to an erroneous conslusion!

Just because an install of XP doesn't pass the very flawed Validation
nonsense is not any kind of proof that the install is illegal. That
would be like going to war based on the FUD of WMDs! ROFL!

The fact that the OP told us about the two DELLs but kept quiet about
the third points ud to conclude that everything is not as perfect as it
should be in an ideal world. The OP volunteered to "purchase a legit
copy of XP" is yet another indication that the installed products may
not be legitimate.

How come you missed this point when you are normally very through in
analysing the issues at stake?

Not if one knows what they're doing... Actually, I've *never* seen a
repair installation *cause* problems, but I have seen a few occasions
when it didn't fix everything that was wrong.

I avoid it

Whatever works best for you.

Third machine is white box with a Win Me sticker on the side. Contact with
previous staff indicates the machine's install of XP is legit...they were
charged for it, but we can find no Product Key anywhere. We have found
manuals for old 486 boards in the same box as everything else...these people
kept everything.

Machine is configured the way we need it, we just do not want to lose the
config in getting legal.

Have you got an invoice or receipt for the Windows XP installed? As far
as product key is concerned it should not be a problem as there are
utilities which can get you this.

First make sure you have managed to find the invoice for that Windows
already installed on WinMe white box. When you have found it, we can
give you links to tools which should get you the serial numbers.

You shouldn't be writing anything like this:

"Machine is configured the way we need it, we just do not want to lose
the config in getting legal."

This implies that you are aware that the installation is not legal and
your conscious makes you to correct this.

See, the "illegality" of this install is NOT a black and white issue.
One shouldn't go jumping to conclusions, just on the the so-called
evidence of an invalid Validation result.
