Illegal Instruction

I have been trying to update C&C Renegade. The programs auto updater hangs. I've downloaded the patch from game spy. Every time I try to install it I Get the following message. NTVDM CPU Has Encountered an Illegal Instruction. How do I fix this so I can update & Possible play on-line with this game.
 
I have no idea why the updater would be using the virtual DOS machine on NT.
Is it possible some other program is gumming up your system?
