Hi ... My friend just ask me if he could install his original retail
version of xp after using it for an upgarde install of vista , One
computer with with his retail xp and another computer with upgrade
vista version , Could he still use the xp version on a different
computer , In other words he wants to install xp and vista on 2
computer but only one for each computer , Is this ok to do ?

If XP is installed on only 'one' computer (not both) then this is okay. If
XP is installed on 'both' computers then the answer is No, you will need to
buy another copy of XP.

You upgraded Vista from XP did you have to enter a new product code? If not
then the 'vista' copy is till using the original XP product code which would
mean you have a single copy of xp running on 2 machines - even though you
have upgraded to vista.

Licencing, unfortunately is extremely complicated and it is difficult to
give hard and fast rules.

Hi John ... Yes I will have my retail xp on just one computer, I'm
thinking to buy an upgrade version of vista when available and try to
install it on a new computer but for me to install the vista upgrade
version it will ask for a pervious version of windows , correct ? And
If so ? I am going to use my xp retail disc , So is this ok to do ?

No, not if you will also have the same copy of XP installed on another
computer. You will need to buy a full version of Vista.

If I understand your question correctly, no, it's prohibited by the terms of
the license.

If you use a copy of one Windows version to qualify for an upgrade to
another Windows version, the copy of the older qualifying version becomes
tied to the new version's license, and is not available to be used on any
other computer.

Yeah, I kind of figure that , Though I just wanted someone I know to
view this topic for him to see the answer , thanks

No. A WinXP license used to qualify for an upgrade to Vista is still
in use on that computer. You cannot use the WinXP license on another
computer, if it's in use as the qualifying license for an upgrade. Read
the Upgrade's EULA; the license for the older, qualifying product
becomes part of (or subsumed by) the upgrade license.
