IFHLP.SYS and missing VMM32 error!??!?

I ran Spybot last night on my PC with XP home and it crashed half way
through 'fixing'.

On booting the machine this morning I first got a 'NTLDR missing' error
'press ctrl alt del' and then a 'Non system disk' I/O error, followed by the
IFHLP.SYS and missing VMM32 error.
From what I've read, these two files are nothing to do with XP?

Pressing F10 for recovery doesn't do anything and I've just found my PC
supplier doesn't include recovery discs anymore.

Is there anything I can do to get this pc booting up again?

Hi,

You will need to boot the WinXP CD and run fixboot from the Recovery
Console.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]

You are right, those files are remnants from a Win9x system. Was this an
upgrade?

No, I just realised that was where it was trying to boot from my second HD
which used to have ME on it.

I have now found that the machine is not recognising my primary HD with
windows on it. It seems to show up when the boot screen first comes up, but
when I go into the BIOS it is not showing in the primary device part.

Running the recovery console just says 'no system disc' or something.

So basically, when booting I still get the NTLDR is missing press
ctrl-alt-del. And then nothing.

Then you know you have a hardware problem. Check the cables and swap
them for known-working ones. Try another drive (or just connect your
current slave drive to where the primary HD is) to see if the issue is
with the drive controller or the motherboard controller.
