Hello all. Win XP SP2

At various times when I'm on the web all of a sudden my iexplorer.exe
process with go up to 50% and I'm unable to do anything about it. Basically
I end up having to shut down my machine manually.

I've tried killing the process, logging off, or restarting the pc but
nothing changes.

I've tried to pinpoint which web site cause this problem, but seems to vary.
CNN.com and yahoo.com seem to be the most frequent, however it also happens
with other pages.

Any ideas or thoughts?

What is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

I have Trend Micro for antivirus and also for antispy. A scan is done every
night by both.

I would go through the preparatory steps at the link I gave you and also
run at least Ad-aware and Spybot just to be sure. One program alone
isn't sufficient to handle most spyware. If after that the machine is
truly clean, then you need to ask yourself The First Question of
Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?

In addition, I don't see where you mentioned which version of Internet
Explorer you're using. If you're using IE7, you might want to take a
look through its newsgroup to see if anyone else is reporting a similar
problem. Perhaps it is some Add On you've installed so manage your Add
Ons and disable anything that isn't from MS and see if you can pinpoint
the culprit that way. Here's the Internet Explorer newsgroup:

I'm using IE7.

Thank you, I will check the other newsgroup and try your suggestions.

Part of the problem is that I don't know what changed other than my monthly
service packs.

I haven't really installed or changed anything on this pc in quite some
time.

X-post to IE General

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

3. If you uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) and don't
reinstall it, does this behavior persist?

Is it iexplore.exe or iexplorer.exe? The former is a valid XP file, the
latter is associated with adware.

I'm pretty sure that it was iexplorer.exe, but I've reset my IE7 to default
settings and I haven't had the problem since. So I will keep an eye out for
that next time it happens if it does.

Thanks for the input Rock.
