What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also, remove
spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode.

You might want to change your canned reply to read "a version not
*earlier* than 2002."

Thanks for catching that, Ken. Yes, it *is* a canned reply because so
many times the problem *is* caused by viruses and spyware. Also, as you
know well, so many Windows users think that just using the av that came
with the computer is enough, never mind that that was in 2001. It is
one of my missions in life to get everybody running Windows to have a
current av program! Thanks again for the correction.

Happy Holidays,

Yes, we almost all use canned replies. Since the same questions
tend to get repeated, it saves a lot of time to cut and paste
rather than have to continually retype the same text (especially
if you type as slowly and badly as I do).
