Internet Explorer 6 + SP 1, fully patched, running on Windows 2000 Pro, also
fully patched.
Also running fully updated McAfee ViruScan, so I doubt I have any bugs.

Suddenly, as of yesterday, any URL I try to hit with IE6 gives me nothing
but "Cannot find server or DNS error"

Meanwhile, AIM, msn Messenger, OE Hotmail, OE News all still work, and if I
open a *windows explorer* session, I can type a URL in the address bar and
get any web site I want. I have also reinstalled IE6+SP1 from
www.microsoft.com and re-windows-updated.

Anything else I should be looking at?

First eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Normally it is a problem caused by the machine either not pulling an I
address or DNS problem.

The problem is easily fixed. It's a TCPIP corruption caused b
spyware. All you do is:
1. Open Regedit.
2. HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
3. Delete the Winsock and Winsock 2 registry keys.
4. Open Network Connection properties for your connection (dial-up o
broadband).
5. Click Install
6. Choose Protocol and Click Add
7. Click Have Disk
8. Browse to c:\windows\inf
9. Choose Microsoft and TCPIP (not version 6).
10. Click your way out and reboot.
