Thanks Nass, but how can I access this group using my normal Outlook
Newsreader?

Two points:

1. If your news server doesn't carry it, you can't add it there
yourself, but you can ask for it to be carried. But see point two for
a better suggestion.

2. You are using Outlook Express. Like most newsreaders, OE permits
the simultaneous use of multiple news servers. The group in question
is carried on Microsoft's server msnews.microsoft.com, which is the
*best* place to get Microsoft newsgroups, since it's the native place
for messages, and you don't have to wait for messages there to be
propagated to some other server.

Simply add that server in Tools | Accounts, and use it to get all you
Microsoft newsgroups.

Aim your OE at this Usenet server: msnews.microsoft.com

Thanks Ken.

I've added the msnews.microsoft.com server and have subscribed the IE7
group. Many thanks.

There is, however a minor niggle: I've subscribed to a group on
msnews.microsoft.com that I'd previously accessed via my ISP's news server.
When I select View|Current View|Show Replies to my Messages, only
yesterday's conversation is displayed. If I view the same group in the old
subscription, I can see all my posts. I have tried using the 'Get Next 300
Headers' several times, but still see only the most recent post. Is there
any way to migrate the threads across or download the old threads to the new
subscription?

You're welcome. Glad to help.

I don't use OE myself, but if I understand what you want to do, I
believe that resetting the newsgroup will do what you want. That will
bring in *all* the old posts (which may be more than you want). I
can't recall exactly how to do this, but perhaps someone else here can
tell you if you can't find it yourself. Or ask in an OE newsgroup.

Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding. Can you just change from 300 posts to
all posts? Will that do what you want?

When I select View|Current View|Show Replies to my Messages, only
yesterday's conversation is displayed

Tools > Options > Read > Get XXX headers at a time

You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click on the newsgroup in
Folders pane > Synchronization Settings > select New Messages Only. Now
every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will download the
next-newest set of headers/messages.

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#cleannews (lotsa good stuff
there).

PS: Also make sure you're posting to the MS newsserver using the same email
address.

Thanks very much Robert.

This seems to have done the trick except that the subscription to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general in msnews.microsoft.com does not go any
further back than the beginning of this year. The same group subscribed on
my ISPs server news.ntlbusiness.com has posts from 2006 so I've had to
retain this subscription.

Is it that the MS server deletes posts after a certain time?

Is there a way to archive useful threads so they don't disappear when the
server gets rid of them?

JF.

Posts on the MS newssever are retained for a minimum of 90 days. If you
want to archive any posts *on your machine*, you'll need to Copy the
post/thread to a local OE folder created for this purpose before the
posts/messages are removed from the server.

You can access an archive of these newsgroups via Google Groups; e.g.,
here's the archive for Windows Update newsgroup:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
