IE6 so slow

IE6 is so slow. It takes over 2 1/2 minutes to open to a blank page. During
that time it takes up to 98% of the CPU. The menus are slow to open. When I
put the cursor over a hyperlink, the underline takes noticeable time to
appear. It is even slow to close.

I have tried a reinstall of WinXP. No change. I tried a repair of IE6 (Run:
"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance" Then repair). No change. Scanned for
virii. None. Scanned with AdAware and removed the spies. No change. Scanned
with Spybot. Removed the spies. No change.

Update will not run from IE6. (Automatic update runs fine). It appears to
time out. I turned off the firewalls and antivirus. No change.

The program is unuseable. I have to switch to Netscape.

How do I fix this?

A pegged CPU means one thing - Spyware.

Download and run SpyBot Search & Destroy from this link:

As I wrote, I already did that.

Sorry, I overlooked that in your post.

"Hijack This" is a last ghasp spyware scanner, at this link,

If no joy, look at running processess, Process Explorer
from System Internals, make give you a clue as to why
your CPU is pegging.

Thought you may like to know that your solution helped solve a problem I was
having with getting Windows Update to work.

Before I was getting an error number 0x80072EE2 when I would access the
Windows Update page. Your solution gave me the answer I was needing. Once I
replaced the host file, the Windows Update worked. Thank you for your help.
