IE6 partially crashes Windows XP

IE6 opens up normally, and loads the first page I go to
without difficulty.

However, on some sites, notably ESPN and CNN, when I
select any link on the banner page, I get the following:

The Windows 'flag' in the upper right corner churns
without any throughput;

No other program can access the internet through my DSL
connection; that is, Outlook opens up the 'Send/Receive'
window, but can not connect with the server;

If I can close the IE window, I have various system
problems:
I can not open up Task Manager via alt-ctrl-delete
If I repeat this keystroke sequence I can not shut
down
If I click on 'Start', the start menu opens, but any
program I select will not open, and the Start menu
freezes open
If I try to open IE6 again from my quick launch
toolbar, the button freezes in the depressed position,
and nothing else in the toolbar will work
I can close and open my network connection, but can
get no throughput to my ISP server
Many other programs will work fine, I can open and
close folders on my desktop fine, videos and music work
fine through WMP or iTunes

I am running a Micron PC with 512 Mb RAM, 80 Gb HD,
Windows XP home.

I have tried fooling the registry into thinking IE is not
installed, then downloading IE again and 'reinstalling'.
No help. I have run system file checker. No help.

Any ideas?

Hi,
Some guesses...
Put those sites in the Trusted sites Zone. Internet Options> Security>
Trusted Sites.

Check your Java installation.

Disable your firewall and check other security programs. One of them may be
causing this.

You do occasionally shut down completely, right? Including powering down the
DSL modem, router, etc.

Try... in a Command window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear the IE cache and restart.

See: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns

Hope this helps,

Don-

Thank you much for the input.

I tested for Java, and found none! I think in the process
of 'reinstalling' IE, the new version did not include JVM
due to the ongoing Sun/MS crap.

So I installed Sun's Java, and all worked great. Until...

I turned on AdSubtract again (I had shut it down for the
install). So with AdSubtract off, CNN and ESPN load and
seem to do fine. But with it back on, I get weirdness:

The same symptoms as before.

When I try to run the Java Tester, which worked after I
installed Sun Java, IE 6 just completely closes. No
crash, just closes.

??

Appreciate further info. Do I need to reconfigure a
proxy, or something similar.

I have the same problem of IE crashing on certain sites and not others. It seems to be related to AdSubstract as I have been able to access the sites without a problem when I shut it down.

What is due to? How come it started happening all of a sudden? Anything that can be done about it or should I just get rid of AdSubstract?

Thanks for any feedback

I have found the same problem. If I shutdown AdSubtract,
the problem no longer occurs. Any other input??
