ie6 not open link in new windows

I have a problem with internet explorer 6, where I can't open anything in a
new window. When I click "Open (Link) in a new window" it comes up with a
see through box (ie. you cant see the previous window) which says Microsoft
Internet Explorer and nothing happens. This is quite annoying as I cant
access certain aspects of pages. Any ideas why?
