Hi,

I'm running win2k server with the latest Ie6 and patches.
Most times I try to click a link that points to a downloadable .exe or
a ftp link for downloading an executable, I do not get a dialog asking me
to save the file as, the browser just sits there, or tries to "open" the
executable and does nothing. Only some of the time, I can use "save target
as",
by right context clicking.

I've looked at the explorer file associations for url and url ftp's but
haven't a clue.
I've also tried to lower the ie security level but to no avail.

Does someone have any ideas???

I don't understand why you are looking at url associations if you are
having problems downloading .exe files but try this as a stab in the
dark:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

....Alan

Alan,

Thanks. I checked the key and it did indeed exist, indicating a
"flash -get" plugin that may be part of my
opera browser installation (I also have mozilla installed).
I deleted the key, and rebooted, but still have the same problem. Opera
still works fine downloading from any type of link despite having deleted
the key, and it is the only way I can download things since IE doesn't work.
However, I do use IE some of the time and it is irritating to have to switch
to Opera or Mozilla to download things.

I'm wondering now if it is some java related problem, as some download
links do not directly point to the executable or other download file (if
they did I could do a "save target as"), but seem to want to call another
page or popup. I have popups enabled, and shutting my firewall off or on
makes no difference.
I am however using the latest sun java plugin for IE, and I note that the
sun java console lists proxies. Could someone please explain what "proxies"
for http, ftp, etc. mean to me????

Alan,

Thanks,
The key did get regenerated. I went to the Opera plugins directory and there
is an uninstall for Flash get, plus instructions on how IE may grab the
opera plugin, I'm trying to figure out the instructions now (see
instructions text below):

This Plug-In for the Opera web browser allows some of the same "Click
Monitoring" to make using FlashGet to download as easy as clicking within
your web browser.

Requirements:
This Plug-In requires FlashGet 0.86 or higher.
This Plug-In has been tested with all recent Windows versions of
Opera(Include Opera5&6).

Setting up FlashGet to handling clicks from Opera:
Just install the plugin and restart Opera. If it doesn't take over in Opera,
just go to "File-Preferences" menu, then on the plugins item click "Find
Plugins". That sets everything up right.

To trigger FlashGet to download other file types: you must Right click on
the link, then pick "Copy Link Address" from the menu.

To have Opera download the file instead of FlashGet: you must Right click on
the link, then pick "Save Link Document As..." from the menu.

Quirks/Issues with this Plug-In.
The Opera click catching has a few different issues/quirks than the browser
monitoring for Netscape or Microsoft.

The types (MIME types) that FlashGet will download are built into the
Plug-In DLL. Unlike the monitoring for other browsers, you can't as easily
control what types are downloaded.

FlashGet has plug-ins for 3 basic types of files: ZIP or EXE files to
download, Audio files, and Video files. You may pick which ones of these
types to do with the install program. For many files, if you Right click on
the link, then pick "Copy Link Address" from the menu, that will trigger
FlashGet too. (If that doesn't, then go to the "New Download" item under the
FlashGet tray icon menu to do it.)

Stopping FlashGet from handling clicks.

For just one 'type' of file:
In Opera, pick the menu "File->Preferences", then "File Types" (or
"Preferences->Associate..." in Opera 3.x).

You must pick the MIME Type at the top, then change form "Show with Plugin"
to "Save to Disk" or "Ask User".

NOTE: this does require you know which MIME Type the server says the file
is. And there are often multiple choices, .ZIP files could be
"application/zip", "application/x-zip", "application/zip-compressed", etc.

To stop FlashGet from handling clicks completely:
Go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and remove "Opera Plug-In for
FlashGet".

OR

Go to the \Opera\Plugins directory on your computer.
Often: C:\Program Files\Opera\Plugins
Delete all the files named: NPFgc*.dll.

Opera Plugin in IE:
It seems that some versions of Internet Explorer import and copy the plugins
from your Opera\Plugins directory. (And other versions of IE may just use
the Opera plugins directly without copying them.) Which it really should not
do for the FlashGet/Opera Plugin.
This can cause odd errors (especially if FlashGet is uninstalled) when
clicking a file to download in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 6.0 does "fix" this in an odd way--IE 6 no longer supports
plugins at all (!) So IE 6 users won't have this problem.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

To Fix:
You will need to delete the FlashGet/Opera plugins from your IE "Plugins"
folders on your computer and remove some registry settings. Follow the steps
below to do this.
Close any open web browser windows! And close all the other windows you can
too.
Another headache is Internet Explorer can re-write some settings you'll
delete below. All Internet Explorer windows must be closed, or Internet
Explorer will just write the settings you delete back again.

Open your web browser "Plugins" folder from My Computer or Windows Explorer.
This folder usually is:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins\

Delete any NPFgc1.DLL, NPFgc22.DLL, and/or NPFgc3.DLL files in both of those
directories.
You may also want to search for those files on your computer in case they
aren't in the locations above. Use the "Start" button, then "Find->Files or
Folders" menu and search for those names.

If they are not there and you can't find them, just continue to the next
steps.

Pick the "Start" button in Windows, then the "Run..." menu item, then type
in REGEDIT.EXE to run the registry editor program.

It's a big tree of items, open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE one,
then Software
then Microsoft
then Internet Explorer
then Plugins
then Extension

Right click on .EXE item then pick Delete from the menu (if .EXE is there.)
Right click on .ZIP item then pick Delete from the menu (if .ZIP is there.)
Right click on .MP3 item then pick Delete from the menu (if .MP3 is there.)

Reboot your computer. That should do it!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
If it doesn't do it:
It seems other versions of IE just use the Opera plugins directly without
copying them. Have not found a fix for this one except uninstalling the
Opera plugins completely.
If you uninstall the Opera plugins (or just delete from the Opera/plugins
directory), then start at step 4 above again.

You'll have to use one of the other methods to get downloads into
FlashGet...copying the URL to the clipboard, or opening the little
drag-and-drop target window.

If so, export that for safety and remove it completely.

Alan,

Thanks. I checked the key and it did indeed exist, indicating a
"flash -get" plugin that may be part of my
opera browser installation (I also have mozilla installed).
I deleted the key, and rebooted, but still have the same problem.

I don't understand why you are looking at url associations if you are
having problems downloading .exe files but try this as a stab in the
dark:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.
