IE6 does not work at all

Can anyone help?

My Internet Explorer 6 is not working. Basically every link I type,
bookmark I click or directs me to the same page and about:blank
appears in the address bar. I have installed a new browser
(Slimbrowser), but need to use IE as I am doing some Web Programming
with VB.NET. I have tried to uninstall and re-install IE but this does
not work.

I think I may have caused the problem myself, but can't be sure. My
computer was hijacked some kind of virus, I installed HijackThis and I
think I may have played around with one too many setting.

I have posted here before and Will Denny very kindly recommended the
following. This does not seem to work. I am desperate for help.

Check your host file ....or possibly someone or something messed with your
IE connection settings and configured you to a proxy.
 
I am having the same problem but only on one profile. I am the administrator and the other profiles work. This occured after I installed and downloaded Office Pro 2003 via CD and then two patches online recommended which were the junk mail patch and the service pack 1 (I think)
