Louis

I am unable to load any pages via IE 6. I re installed
the broadband driver etc via my ISP My ISP has now
informed me that it is because there are known problems
with IE 6.0 working with windows 98.
They suggest I go back to IE 5.5 and it will work ok.

Firstly, is there problems with IE6 working with Windows
98 and secondly how do I fix it or how can I get IE 5.5
and put it back on my system? Ive not had any problems
like this before and can only imagine a windows update
brought it on.

My modem and connections are ok because I can display
web content using my business laptop (Windows XP).
Hence I can post here. So it seems they are correct in
saying its my IE6 and windows 98 software.

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Louis

Don't have any knowledge of Windows 98 & IE, but check the MS download
center re IE 5.5. The page for 128 bit security updates may have a download
you can use.

Hi Louis - Try this. Go to Start|Run and enter "regsvr32 urlmon.dll"
(without the quotes). After you get a Success message, re-boot. If that
doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the additional
steps outlined there:

Thanks for this. I have run all the files suggested and
also the ones in the article and still cant access any
web pages. Didnt know where to find the registry settings
referred to though.

Should I remove the browser and add IE 5.5? Is there
anywhere I can get a full version with instructions on
how to replace.?

Regards
Louis

Hi Louis - In Add-Remove Programs, select IE6. You should be offered an
option to remove it and return to your previous configuration (which is
probably some version of IE5.x). Do that and then you can upgrade to IE5.5
if necessary.

Hi Jim
I have managed removed IE completely from my system. When
I took out the current version I had IE6 SP1 still there
and the problem still was. So on removing that version I
have no IE at all.
Can I download IE5 from somewhere and is it easy to
install?
Cheers
Louis

HI Louis - Yeah, see here, particularly the last two:

and/or http://www.greenapple.com/access/software/custom-browsers/

or paste "rundll32 iedkcs32.dll,Clear" without the quotes.)

Jim,
I got a download thanks and put it on a cd. When I try to
install it though cant get past command line for
installation program in Run Installation Program. I just
have one folder called ie55.
Is there something else I need?

Thanks for your help so far.
Louis

Hi Louis - I didn't follow that exactly. Can you be more specific as to
what you're doing with what files where when you try and install?

Sorry Jim,
I visited the site at
http://browsers.evolt.org/ie/32bit/5.5 and then selected
a site called [uk/http] flirble.org (uk)to download the
file called ie55. The size was 73.95MB so I assume it was
the full IE5.5
Downloaded this onto my desktop and then copied it to a
cd-r.
I then went to my windows 98 pc and selected
Start>settings>control panel>add remove programmes and
tried to install the downloaded ie55.
I click <install> then browse to the E:drive where I have
the disk. When I select the saved folder Ie55 it shows in
the window as a program icon. Nothing shows in the 'file
name' box. The 'File type' box says programs.
When I click open - nothing happens. When I double click
on the icon I get the 'Run Installation Program'window.
Command line for installation program shows E:\Ie55
\ie55.exe
When I click finish, a dos window opens and scrolls a
very fast saying 'unable to install internet explorer'
and 'cannot proceed'. After a number of lines whizz past,
the dos window dissappears. It goes without saying that
the IE browser has not been installed.

Sorry this is dragging on a bit, Jim. I'm not that smart
when it comes to such things. Not used to having pc
problems.

Thanks
Louis

Hi Louis - OK, the file you downloaded is ie55.exe. I assume that this is
the file that you copied to your CD. Open Windows Explorer in Win98 and
navigate to your CD player. Navigate to that specific file - ie55.exe - and
double click on it. Don't go through Add-Remove Programs. See if it
installs that way. NOTE: Be sure that you turn off as much other stuff as
possible before doing the install, particularly any Anti-Virus and very
especially ALL Symantec/Norton software. (You may want to try doing the
install from Safe mode to prevent your Startup Programs from loading.)

Hi Jim, I tried starting it in windows explorer and got
the same DOS window scrolling cant install etc. for a few
seconds and then nothing. Couldn't try installing from
safe mode as safe mode wont give access to drives other
than C:drive or floppy disk.
The filename I downloaded does not say ie55.exe except
when I right click and check in properties - could this
make a difference?

However...I also tried to install a version of IE5.5
which I found on an old computer magazine cd. I thought
it might have the auto install paraphanalia. It began
installing and looked good up to the point where I got a
message saying Intallation Incomplete - not all
components installed successfully - following components
not installed -'Browser Customisations'.

I clicked <next> and a message said 'Installation
Complete, the components installed are ready for use.
Thank you for using Microsoft products!' (you are welcome
Mr Gates..)

Anyway, on checking programmes in the start menu - MS
Internet Explorer Version: 5.50.4134.0600IC is installed.
Great - but guess what - no pages display, no home page
as before.

So I am now going back to my ISP and will check my
settings. They initially said it was a conflict between
IE6.0 and Win98 remember.

I will advise you of the outcome Jim.

Regards, Louis

Hi Jim, how are things?
After various checks, my ISP has informed me that I have
a corrupted winsoc (I think thats how it is spelt) file.
This prevents me accessing internet content and email.

He maintains that they come across this often.

When I went through checks with him I could ping and get
response from IP address numbers but not www.bbc.co.uk or
www.ntlworld.co.uk for example.

He has suggested I need to hack the registry or re-
install windows 98 to resolve this.

Could you confirm this is likely problem and give me any
helpful advice? It seems I will lose all my files etc if
I re install. Are there instructions on hacking the
registry? - it sounds a bit dodgey to me. I need to fix
this soon or I will be lynched by the kids....
Any help is and has been appreciated.
If I am now in the wrong help newsgroup please advise
where I should post.

Cheers

Hi Jim,
SUCCESS!
The Boston University winsock fix worked and I am now on
the internet using my windows98 pc and IE5.5

Many thanks for your patience and assistance without which
I would have still been struggling or re-installing
windows or whatever.

All the best and thanks again
Louis

YW, Louis - I'm glad to hear that you (we?) finally got it fixed. :)
