IE6 and Windows Interaction Problem

I am unable to open any Window including My Computer and
Control Panel. Attempts to open a window gives an error
message accusing Internet Explorer and VX2.DLL and says
it will shut IE down even though IE is not open or
active. However, I could open Control Panel in Safe Mode.

I have tried to uninstall IE, but when I run uninstall
from the control panel (in Safe Mode), there is no option
to, only to repair, revert back to previous version or
delete the IE setup folder. I tried reverting to the
older version, but this only aggrivated Windows further
in that nothing worked in Safe Mode either.

I ran System File Check which accused setupx.dll as being
corrupt, so I extracted a clean copy from the install
CD. This had no effect.

After re-installing IE6.0 SP1 I can now open Windows such
as Control Panel again only in Safe Mode.

Any ideas?

Keith,
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions."

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup is completed.

That might allow IE to work. Then Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from another
machine onto a floppy disk if necessary. CWShredder may find nothing, but
it's a good first step.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

The VX2.DLL file indicates transponder spyware. Spybot S&D from
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd can remove it.
More on transponder at
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/Transponder.html
and
http://www.cexx.org/vx2.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

Don,

Thanks for that. I had to run Spybot in Safe Mode to
remove VX2.DLL, but it did the trick.

Thanks again.

Keith.
