I use IE 6.0.2900, XP2. Until recently, I was able to click on a mpeg
or wmv file in a browser window and it would open the file in Windows
Media Player. I now have to save the file first then open it outside of
IE. I had some problems with spyware and I did some cleanup usint
HiJackthis, so this might have caused the change
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ken

And if you just click on the MPEG or WMV file on the web-page, what happens?

Did you post your HijackThis (HT) log to an appropriate forum for review by
experts or did you just decide to have it fix some things?

Did this behaviour begin after installing SP2 or after fixing stuff with HT?
Have you installed MS04-038?

I just tried it on a music catalog site and when I click on a sample
track to be played on Media Player, it gives me an error message that it
cannot find the server and the page cannot be displayed. When I click
to play the sample with Real Player, it works.

I posted my HijackThis log to Geeks to Go and Castle Cops and didn't get
any useful responses; I deleted one obvious BHO and little else.

I installed SP2 two months ago and things worked fine until recently. I
don't know if I have installed MS04-038, and I don't have auto update
set. What does it do?

Thanks for your response.

IIRC, MS04-038 (or possibly another update) addresses the problem you're
having. Check in at Windows Update and install all Critical Updates,
please, then test those sites again. I would recommend that you enable
Automatic Updates, too.

Thanks again for your suggestions. I now have Automatic Updates turned
on, and have installed MS04-038. The problem persists. It must be
something associated with IE since both Opera and Firefox work to open
Media Player. I could not find anything helpful in the KB 883260 file.

Do you have any other suggestions:?

I've posted a related problem involving mp3 links several times.

So far there does not appear to be a solution, other than using
a different browser. However in my case Media Player works,
but other choices of viewer do not work ;-)

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Can you give some clue on the time frame for the update?
This problem has rendered IE useless here ;-)

Except for "out of band" releases, most patches are released on the second
Tuesday of each month.
