IE unable to remember passwords

Internet Explorer is unable to remember passwords used to
log on to a secure site. When I click the link to log on,
a dialog box pops up "Connect to..." and I enter the
username and password, click "remember my password" and
click ok. The name and pass are correct; I log on but the
next time it asks for the password again. Ad infinitum.
What is stopping IE from remembering passwords? Thank you
for your help!
