IE shuts ALL IE windows when clicking on a link or File/New

Help! IE 6.0 consistently closes every single IE window I have open whenever I click File/New (to open a new window without killing current windows) or when clicking on links within a window. I've reset all defaults under all Internet Options tabs, and am at a loss. Does anyone have ANY ideas?? I'm about ready to kill it! Thanks.
 
Well... thanks to an incredible resource of smart folks... I happened to see a recommendation to uninstall Yahoo Companion... and lo and behold... voila!!! The evil problem is no more!! Thanks all for having a useful, informative and "layman's speak" forum!!
 
I have EXACTLY the same problem...I have been unable to
find a solution but I think this error message is involved:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
shdocvw.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1400 Offset: 00026af6
