I'll try & open IE6 only to "gum up" my system with two editions trying to
run at the same time/ I have to run Task Mgr to positively shut one down or
check before casually attempting a launch. What gives?

Hi,

Try reinstalling IE. Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set it
to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating
system files [recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file
types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the ie.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?

Also, remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to
run CWShredder and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm.
Although CWShredder is no longer being updated, it will still clean
older variants of the CoolWebSearch malware. Please read the
instructions carefully. Also, make sure you've visited Windows Update
and applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from
Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall.
