Internet Explorer is continuously opening itself (at the moment it has
43 windows open!)... how can I stop it from doing this (at the moment I
have to kill it using Zone Alarm but that seems to slow my internet
connection).

Can I uninstall it? I couldn't find it in the program list. I use
Firefox mainly anyway.

Thanks.

That is a classic symptom of a computer that has been infested with
spyware/trojans.

What anti-spyware protection are you currently using on your computer?
Antivirus software won't protect against most spyware so you need
specific antispyware software.

Go to (at least) one of the following free online scanning sites and
see what the results are:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Then go to MVP Jim Eshelman's spyware page at
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm and check out his suggestions for
preventative software.

Good luck

ok cheers... it was infected with a lot. I have done this before by
posting a 'Hijack This' log on webuser.com and having someone suggest
which scanners to use etc. I'm using Zone Alarm with spyware.

Another good resource for posting HJT logs is MVP Jim Eshelman's forum
