IE name resolution

I can't seem to use domain names to get to websites.
If I try to ping an IP address from the command prompt, I
get responses, so I know I am connected to the internet.
But if I try to ping something like microsoft.com all I
get is "Unknown Host"
Any ideas?
I had thought that I found a fix for this once before,
but I cannot seem to find it now.
I've uninstalled all web accelerator thingies, and
reinstall Internet explorer, but nothing is getting me
any further.

Nevermind, I found a fix.

This 3rd party tool repaired the problem (winsock), I
can't guarantee it will work for anyone else, but it
worked for me.
