IE Loses Screen Layout

When I first start IE6 after starting my computer, it always comes up as a small window with my links tool bar on the far right instead of below the address bar. I maximize the IE6 window and can move the links tool bar down so it has its own line to display the web sites I want to access easily. My window setup comes up the way I configured it previously if I shutdown and restart IE6, but goes back to its original layout configuration when I bring IE6 up for the first time after restarting my computer. I've checked for options to save my layout configuration but I'm not finding anything obvious (to me at least). Any ideas how I can get IE6 to always come up with the window layout I've set up previously?

Resizing Screen (Window) in IE

For your small screen, if you have already tried the maximize, by clicking
on the center tab open the upper right corner of the screen, then do the
following:

Pass the cursor over the right side of the screen until you get a two ended
arrow <--->, then hold the left mouse button down and drag the edge of the
screen to the right as far as you want it. Then do the same on all the other
sides
until it fills the screen. Then close the Explorer and see it the screen is
now fully open.

It is possible you may have parasites, spyware, adware or
malware on your system causing the problem. Download
and install, you *must* update the programs prior to running to
be sure they have the latest definitions, then run the programs
below. They are free and very effective.Be sure to run both
SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not detect the other
may. It is important that you follow all directions carefully:

My window setup comes up the way I configured it previously
if I shutdown and restart IE6, but goes back to its original layout
configuration when I bring IE6 up for the first time after restarting
my computer.

Besides Jan's suggestion to check for malware there are some
normal things which could account for this symptom.

First, follow Jan's suggestion *not* to maximize the window when
you want to preserve a window's normal properties. From your
description is sounds as if you may be getting temporary persistence
of a window's maximized properties. In that case a window's normal
properties would be unchanged. In order to save a window's normal
properties you have to close the window in normal mode;
further, if there are any other windows open in normal mode still open
their properties will be preserved when they close. So if you aren't
making sure that iexplore.exe is no longer an active process (e.g. using
Task Manager) after you close your modified window that could also
explain your symptom even if you are making your modifications
on a normal mode window.

Another possibility is that your user profile is not yours to change
or something equivalent is inhibiting updates. In that case check with
your Administrator (e.g. ask if a "mandatory profile" is in effect)
or see if a replacement user profile can be created.

See item 4, Testing User Profiles, in the following article for related
information.
