Hi all,

Using IE6+sp1 on Win2k pro.
It has always worked fine, without any problems.
I decided to update Windows and several patches have been installed. Ever
since IE hardly works: it gives most of the time a "Page not found" error,
especially when clicking on a link. Online transactions are now impossible.
I have uninstalled all patches and reinstalled IE6 + sp1, but all to no
avail.
Funny enough another browser (Mozilla Firefox) has got a similar problem as
well, so I thing something's wrong in the registry.
What do I need to change or delete in the registry in order to get my
browser working again?

All help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi Fokke :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Try uninstalling the recent patches from the Add/Remove programs if there
are listed there and seeif the problem presists.

If that is not an option, try doing a repair of the OS and see if that
helps:

You only need to uninstall those Service Packs that were installed *after*
installing IE6. You will have to go to the Windows Update and reinstall all
the necessary updates after the reinstall.

Also, download and install the following from another machine to a floppy
disk and install on the affected machine and run them, and see if this helps
restore your connection.

First eliminate any spyware.

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

No, though I have used www.download.com a few instances, Spybot, Adaware and
CWShredder detect no spyware.

If a repair and the others have not resolved the problem, then you should
follow through with Frank's suggestion to clean your system of the scumware
that is causing this problem.

Hi Jan,

Spybot and CWShredder didn't find anything. Adaware found Alexa, which
obviously must have been installed with a MS update. It has been removed.
HijackThis did not find anything unusual. I am running Spywareguard and
Spywareblaster.

So, unless it's spyware which is absolutely stealth, I don't know what's
wrong.

Cheers,
Fokke

Hi Fokke :-)

If you have done all the process, checked all the articles, there is no
scumware on the system, the repair did not work, and you sitll can not
update, then I am not sure what else to suggest. However, you might also
try the following and see if it might help. If not, then you may have to
back up your data and do a clean reinstall of the OS:

First go to Start>Run>type sfc /scannow and click OK. The program will
check for corrupted files and reinstall them. Unfortunately it does not
provide a report.

If still no joy, then:

Do a search of files and folders for HOSTS, no extension (not the HOSTS.SAM)
and open it with notepad and see if there are any enteries for Microsoft.
Search for the site a248.e.akamai.net and add a '#' (without the
single-quotes) to the beginning of the line. This will cause Hosts to
ignore it.
Save your changes. Try to ping the site a248.e.akamai.net ... which should
now be successful.

Also...here are some articles that might help:

Hi Jan

Thanks for all the info. There are very usefull links between them.
However, I tried a few things but it did not work out.
I'm afraid I'll have to face a new installation :-(

Thanks for your help anyway.
Much appreciated.

Cheers,
Fokke
