IE freezes after entering invalid url

When I enter a url in the address bar starting with a
forward slash e.g. /something , IE freezes.
I've reapaired IE. Virus check is up to date. Tried all
the search/address bar options.

Can you get to the sites if you add http://www....?

http://www.something/something gives a (correct) error
message "The page cannot be displayed". No CRASH.
Problem lies in the starting '/'.
