I can no longer go to any of the travel sites on the web. Expedia,
travelocity, orbitz, you name it. I can go to the home page of the sites, on
a good day I can type in my search info and hit GO. Then IE informs me it can
not open the requested window and has to "abort operation". All I can do then
is click OK and it sends me to some MSN search window. This is driving me
crazy. I run XP sp1. I have been trying to find an answer to this since last
year in August. My husband passionately "updates" the machine via the
Microsoft Update site and the problem started after one of his beloved "
updates" was installed. He also updated us to sp2, but it caused
functionality problems and I booted it back off via system restore. Help?
Please?

We need to pare this down a bit by doing some basic changes/checks.

You may want to set a System Restore Point first.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select the radio button for Create a restore point
Click NEXT
Enter a Restore Point description
Click CREATE
Click CLOSE

Also, I would consider running Disk Cleanup before you continue.
Go to
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
Note: Be sure to check Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files.

TEST #1
Launch IE and go to
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
Click RESTORE DEFAULTS
Click OK
Close IE
Just to make sure the changes 'stick', REBOOT
Open IE and check the Expedia.com search again

TEST #2 (if necessary)
Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security
If Default Level is disabled, click Custom Level and set to MEDIUM security
level. Otherwise click DEFAULT LEVEL.
Close IE
Just to make sure the changes 'stick', REBOOT
Open IE and check the Expedia.com search again

TEST #3 (if necessary)
Close IE
Use the Windows search tool to locate the HOSTS file
It should be at a location similar to the following:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Right-click on HOSTS and rename it. For example, HOSTS.SAV or HOSTS.OLD
Reboot
If the HOSTS file you renamed above is missing, then you should be able to
copy a version from C:\I386
Open IE and check the Expedia.com search again

BTW, you really ought to consider trying to find out why you are having
problems with Windows XP SP2.

You might also want to validate your Windows file by running the System File
Checker.
Inset your Windows XP CD-ROM, the go to Start > Run and type
sfc /scannow

Please post back with your results.
